One of the unique things about Carroll is the opportunities that students are given in their classes for real-world experience.
An example of this is Professor Brent Northup’s Event Planning Class. This class focuses on all the aspects that go into not just event planning, but developing better the skillsets and mindsets necessary to succeed in our future careers.
Irish Night is put on to welcome Ireland’s National Debate Champs. The winners are awarded a trip to different colleges around the United States.
The Irish debaters this year are Cian Crew, from Galway, Roisin McCormack from Rush, Ireland, and Athena Wu from Dublin.
Representing Carroll this year during the debate are senior Ashlynne Jeffries from Vancouver, Washington; junior Brad Tomasovic from Great Falls; and junior Davis Thompson from East Helena.
Irish Night is a gift to Carroll, to the Helena Community, and to all the Irish of Montana. Everyone comes together to celebrate the students’ successes and watch an exciting debate, pitting the Irish National Champs Vs. The Carroll Talking Saints.
The topic of the debate is “This House regrets the decline of formality in social and professional life.” Carroll will be dressed in their finest, and will defend dressing up.
I spoke to some the Event Planning students to find out how planning has been going and why they think everyone should come to Irish Night.
“Irish Night is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Irish debate champions, Irish culture, and Carroll’s debate team, the Talking Saints,” said Kimber Koteskey, a first year communication major from Great Falls, Montana.
“Doing all the behind-the-scenes stuff is stressful, but also a great learning experience!” said Danielle Sexton, a junior accounting and finance major from Seeley Lake, Montana.
“We are having so much fun advertising for this event,” said Sarah Goodman, a junior in communications from Newport, Washington. “We cannot wait to see you all there!”
“If you’ve never tasted Irish soda bread or savored Irish cheeses, you’ll want to come out to Irish Night,” said Joshua Johnson, a junior communications major from Helena.
Irish Night is happening on Thursday, April 9, from 6-9 p.m. in the lower cube. The Tiernan Dancers will perform at 6:15 p.m. and the debate starts at 7:15 p.m. Seniors Catherine Dudley of Pendleton, Indiana, and Olivia Smith, a senior from Bozeman, will serve as emcees for the debate.
The crowd will be invited to participate in Irish trivia contests throughout the night – and win prizes from local Helena merchants.
Irish Night is an evening no one should want to miss!
