Guadalupe Safety

Fire safety measures in Guadalupe Hall are complete after several years of work, according to a campus facilities official.

The three-phase project was completed during winter break and focused on installing fire sprinklers throughout the building.

When Guadalupe was first constructed, sprinkler systems were not required in the safety codes, said Tori Pearson, Carroll’s assistant director for facilities.

“We are updating our safety standards,” Pearson said.

The project was done in three phases over the course of three years. The first phase was to bring water for the sprinklers into the building.

Phase two took place during the summer, when sprinklers were installed in residential rooms.

Phase three included systems being installed in the fishbow, hallways, and attic of Guadalupe, which was completed during the winter break.

After installation, inspectors and the company completed walkthroughs to make sure safety regulations were met, Pearson said.

The project was paid for through the facilities department’s budget, which is used for building maintenance. This budget covers everyday fixes such as fans, lights, and door locks.

Pearson said they started the fire sprinkler system upgrades in Guadalupe Hall to improve safety for the youngest population.

During the summer, younger child camps stay in Guadalupe, so these safety measures are also important from a liability standpoint.

Residents of Guadelupe believe the new fire safety measures will benefit Carroll in the long run.

“Fires can be caused by the kitchen downstairs or by leaving a candle in your room,” said Maddox Anderson. “The sprinkler system is going to protect us residents and the building.” Anderson is a freshman health science major from Missoula.

Facilities officials say they are doing everything they can to keep the residents and buildings safe here at Carroll College.
