The sound of song filled the air on this bright sunny Friday afternoon as a procession of students carried a cross around the campus grounds in order to show reverence on Good Friday.
On Friday, April 18 at 1:30 p.m. a group of students and community members stepped out from the chapel to walk the Stations of the Cross. Their journey took them from All Saints Chapel to several places around campus before arriving back at the chapel.
The procession was filled with quiet contemplation and prayer as participants reflected on the last moments of Jesus’ life.
Among the participants was a plain wooden cross that was held high throughout the procession.
“Even though I was just holding the cross, it was pivotal for helping others to pray and reflect on Jesus’ death and I am blessed to have been able to imitate Christ in that simple method of service,” said Davis Greenwood, a sophomore philosophy major from Boise, Idaho.
The Stations of the Cross are common Catholic devotion during the season of Lent. They typically take place on Fridays during this season. The Stations of the Cross consists of 14 steps, or stations, that describe various events surrounding the death of Jesus.
The Good Friday procession was a special devotion when compared to the previous Stations of the Cross events that had been held on the preceding Fridays. The procession allowed students to not only reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus but also to walk the steps of his journey to death at Calvary.
The procession ended around 2:40 p.m, just in time for the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion which was held at 3 p.m. at All Saints Chapel.
