By The Talking Saints sent seven students to compete at the Whitworth tournament in Spokane, Washington, on Oct. 28-29, winning 10 awards and capturing the third place school sweepstakes award.
“Wonderful showing by the magnificent seven,” said coach Brent Northup. “Our early tournaments were debate only, so this was a chance to get our speech and drama events tuned up. Two first year students won four of those awards in their first college speech tournament. A happy trip home for all.”
Junior Anna Brown from Olympia, Washington, reached finals in both Dramatic Interpretation and Impromptu, placing third in impromptu. Sophomore Catherine Dudley from Markleville, Indiana, placed third in informative, and sophomore Charlie Said of Seattle, placed fourth in extemporaneous speaking.
Jenna Hammond of Libby led the first years by winning novice impromptu and placing third in novice extemp. Emily Mowat of Billings place second in varsity prose and third in novice impromptu.
“It was great to practice our speeches ahead of the regional tournament,” said Said.
“This small tournament has my heart,” said Spencer McDonald of Missoula. “I love watching the freshman’s hard work and seeing the upperclassmen’s cherished platforms. Friendship and comradeship ran deep this weekend. I’m so proud of their hard work. Linfield will only be better.”
The full team is preparing for the championship regional event hosted online by Linfield, on Nov. 10.
“Whitworth was awesome!” said Lola Baerlocher, a sophomore from Uniontown, Washington.
“I had a really good time hanging out with teammates and getting to bond with my team, laughing and having a really good time,” said Brown. “It is really nice to get to meet and interact with people from other schools, something that can be missed online.”
