Jibber Jabber February 2023: Best/worst dates

Vicente Ortega, sophomore, bio-chemistry, from Ronan, Montana

The best date I have ever been on was during my freshman year at Carroll.

The plan was to go to Suki for a nice dinner, alas it was full and there was no chance to get a seat. So an impromptu date returning back to the dorm, getting a pizza and watching a movie was all that was needed.

The simplicity and accessibility to the plan made it so ground to earth. Creating a less artificial date and just enjoying the moment.

The worst date. Easy.

After walking back from the HAC after a workout and ping pong date. Not paying attention, I stepped in a mud puddle that was also filled with dog feces which led to a less-than-optimal experience.

Nothing but embarrassment as I walked back to Guad with a foul-smelling shoe.

Payton Whimmer, junior, bio-chemistry, Helena, Montana

The best date I ever had is also the worst date I ever had!

I was 17 years old and my boyfriend and I went paddle boarding on the lake near Highlight Reservoir around 2:30 pm.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, the winds picked up rapidly! A storm was coming in! We paddled with all our strength back to shore, but it was impossible to make progress.

The only thing we could do was get off the board and drag it back to land.

But, when I hopped off I immediately fell, face and all, into thick mud. I was covered!

Still, we had to carry that paddle board with us through the water and 30 minutes by trail, barefoot, to my boyfriend’s car.

We spent another 30 minutes in the storm packing everything up. I was still covered in mud, but at least the sight had showers and I was able to wash off before sitting in my boyfriend’s car. We were both freezing from the storm, so we went to coffee afterward.

But, these kinds of dates really are memory makers! This is why it was my best and worst date.

My boyfriend took me out which was different than any of the other nights we have gone out.

It was a super nice date. First, he took me to an expensive steak dinner at Joey’s Bellevue where dressing up nice was a great change of pace for the both of us.

After going to Target for a quick shopping trip, we went to go watch Avatar: The Way of Water in 4-D.

And last we drove around Seattle together in the dark where we could look at the stars and tall buildings.

I really enjoyed this night with my boyfriend and I will never forget all the times we spent together! It is so funny recalling how we met…I never would have thought I would be so lucky to have him as a boyfriend.

I remember so clearly and was so upset this day. Also not to mention, I am slightly embarrassed for my actions but I will get to those in a second.” My childhood friend had asked me out to the local arcade but after playing several games, the conversation got immensely awkward and I resulted in climbing out of the bathroom window to escape and call my parents to pick me up.

My parents did not know I was going on a date that day and I  had to tell them which ended with my mother laughing at me due to my silliness.

Tess Prendergast, senior, biology and education, from Selah Washington

My best date was with my now husband, Conner.

The first week I was in Helena I asked him to show me some cool sightseeing places around town.

First, we got some dinner and I didn’t share my dessert, which he still gives me a hard time about.

We went to three places. At the last place, it was dark and we could see all the city lights.

We go to leave and pull into a driveway to turn around. We went down a long driveway with trees and he commented, ‘this would be a really good place to hide a body if I wanted to get rid of someone.”

He doesn’t remember it, I was scared at first, but the rest of the date went great.

I went on a date with a guy from the symphony after rehearsal.

We didn’t even get to the date. We got in his car and talked for 10ish minutes.

Then he said ‘Are you ready?’ I said ‘Ready for what?’

He whips his pants down and I got out of the car and left.

Looking back on it, the best date I went on was with my high school ex.

I was a senior and she was a junior. I was just about to graduate, and she did this scavenger hunt in celebration, as well as it being our six-month anniversary.

She printed out all these clues and I would have to drive all around Helena to find the clues.

I liked it because it made me feel special and no one had done that for me. All the spots held significant meaning to either me or us and I really appreciated that.

Her final gift was a trash can which is funny because it’s the main thing I remember about her.

My worst date was with the same girl, we had been dating only a couple of weeks and my cousin was in the musical at school.

I decided to invite her. After we went to drive around and got hungry so we went to Taco Johns, I ended up eating both my food and hers.

Then we decided to go to Top of the World, an overlook.

We got there and were talking and then my stomach began to feel sick and I got a headache.

It got to the point where we were talking and she asked if I was okay and then I can’t remember if I leaned out of the car or got out and went to the side and threw up.

I was outside for a while because I was sick but also embarrassed. In the end, everything was fine, and after that, we went official, which I thought was cool even after all that.

Emily Funseth, fifth-year senior, sociology, from Great Falls, Montana

I haven’t been on many, but my favorite date was when I went on a car camping trip in the woods with my boyfriend.

We hung out in our super comfy bed that we made in the back of the car.

It’s my favorite date because it was very intimate.  We didn’t have any internet or cell phone service, so we were able to spend quality time with each other.

Oh man, this one is good!

So when I was a teenager, my ex and I decided that it was a good idea to go on a double date.

But this was no ordinary double date.

At the time he was my ex and we thought it was wise to go on a double date, with other people.

We valued our friendship and were trying to work that out.

So I went with a guy I didn’t even like and he went with a girl that he didn’t even like. It was just really awkward and not well thought out.

Sam Vieira, sophomore, health science, from Kona, Hawaii

We set a $20 budget and we went to a grocery store for a lunch date.

We bought picnic items in the store and then we drove down to a park by the river.

This park was nearby a concert where Imagine Dragons, Bruno Mars, and MGMT were playing.

We sat at a bench, ate our lunch, and listened to music.

In the 8th grade, I went on a double date with my best friend.

My best friend was dating this girl and she brought her friend along for me.

This friend of hers was someone who had previously rejected me.

We all went ice skating but I was the only one who could skate. I spent the whole date teaching my best friend how to stay upright while the girls sat and watched us.

The girl who I was supposed to be on the “date” with ignored me the whole time.

Claire Montowski, senior, chemistry, from Kettle Falls, Washington

Probably the best date that I ever went on was when we went for a hike in January, but there wasn’t any snow on the ground.

He brought hot chocolate and a speaker, and he took me to an abandoned train tunnel.

We sat and had hot chocolate and then he took me inside the tunnel, it was all ice covered.

Then he turned on the music, and we sang and slow danced the song was “All Around Me” by Flyleaf.

He had me over to watch a movie, and he cooked me dinner.

By cooking me dinner, I mean he made me boxed macaroni and cheese but he did it wrong, and he made frozen vegetables but forgot the seasoning.

He also added 4-day-old burnt chicken that was heated up in the microwave.

And then we watched a really violent anime, and I don’t like violent shows!
