The Carroll College men and women’s golf teams traveled to Billings, Montana on October 3-4 to compete at the Peter Yegen Golf Invitational. Both placed third in the conference to finish off the fall season. The conditions were fair, with the weather at a high of 64 degrees on Monday and 73 degrees on Tuesday.
“The conditions were great, the greens were playing fast and the course offered some open fairways for a majority of the holes,” said Jaedon Lieberg, a fifth-year from Helena and a new member of the golf team.
The men’s team was led by Leo Werschay, a freshman accounting major from St. Augusta, Minnesota. Werschay placed 12th in the fiercely competitive matchup against the Battlin’ Bears.
“It is hard competing against a team on their home course, especially when some of our players have never played the Peter Yegen course,” said Lieberg. “You’re having to learn the course as you play, while your competition has played from just about every position in the fairway and has a great understanding of each green and how it’s sloped. It provides a huge advantage.”
The Carroll College women’s team was led by Makayla Christiansen, a junior nursing major from Oakdale, California, and Katie Fagg, a senior in psychology from Missoula, Montana. Christiansen placed fourth in the Peter Yegen tournament and Fagg placed seventeenth.
“Makayla and Katie played well. They represented the Carroll College golf program well and battled hard against great competition,” said Lieberg.
The Peter Yegen Golf Invitational marks the end of the fall season for both the men’s and the women’s golf teams. They will look to pick up where they left off with the start of the spring season beginning in late March to early April.
