Sourdough Series: Chocolate Chip Cookies

I never knew sourdough cookies were even a thing until my phone started feeding me recipe after recipe for sourdough chocolate chip cookies.

At some point, I had to wonder if my phone was listening to me or if the universe was simply telling me it was time to try something new.

After seeing so many people share their baking creations on TikTok, I decided to give one a shot. I landed on a recipe by Lindsey Christine and figured it was worth experimenting with.

After all, what could be better than combining the homemade goodness of sourdough with a classic chocolate chip cookie?

The recipe called for simple ingredients: flour, baking soda, salt, softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, an egg, vanilla extract, sourdough discard, and plenty of chocolate chips. One of the best parts was that the recipe could use either sourdough discard or active starter, making it a great way to put some extra starter to use.

The process was pretty straightforward. First, I creamed the softened butter and sugars together, which is an important step in just about any cookie recipe. Then I added the wet ingredients, followed by the dry ingredients, and folded in the chocolate chips.

After mixing everything together, the dough went into the refrigerator for an hour before baking at 350°F for 13 minutes.

Of course, baking wouldn’t be baking without a little uncertainty. I was honestly a little short of the full cup of sourdough discard the recipe called for, which made me nervous about how the cookies would turn out. I wondered if the missing discard would make a noticeable difference in the texture or flavor.

Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about. The cookies came out puffy, soft, and absolutely delicious.

They had all the comforting goodness of a classic chocolate chip cookie, with the added fun of using sourdough in a way I hadn’t tried before.

And the biggest seal of approval? My roommates devoured them.

This little baking experiment reminded me that social media can occasionally lead to some pretty great discoveries. Sometimes, all it takes is a recipe that keeps popping up on your feed and a willingness to try something new.

If you have sourdough starter sitting in your fridge and want to switch up your usual baking routine, these cookies are definitely worth a try.

My biggest takeaway: Don’t be afraid to experiment in the kitchen. Even when you don’t have quite enough of an ingredient, you might end up with something delicious!
