Photography Spotlight – Chloe Salusso

What is your year, hometown, and major?

I am a freshman from Butte and majoring in nursing.

What got you into photography?

There are two answers to that. When I was little, my nanna would take random pictures of everything, and she would hand me the camera and tell me to go take pictures. And then, my senior year of high school, I was like, “I need a hobby; why don’t I become a photographer?” So I took my friend’s senior photos, and that is where it all started.

What is your favorite type of photography?

I really only take photos of people, but I will occasionally do a nature shoot for photo promotions. Couple shoots are the most fun for me.

What type of camera do you use?

I use a Canon Rebel T7 camera for all of my shoots. It has worked well so far, and I would recommend it!

What has improved the most since you started?

Everything. My composition has improved, and I have learned to take good photos regardless of the tools available to me. I have also improved by using camera tools to help with lighting and positioning people so the sun doesn’t wash them out!

What is your artistic process?

I try to encourage people to be themselves and ask questions to break the ice. There is lots of “let’s paint a picture,” where I try to draw out what I know that couples or families already feel for one another and capture that in the photo. When you can draw feelings out of people while taking pictures, it embodies their relationship. Pictures aren’t about the moment; it’s about representing the people in them and their relationships.

What plans or goals do you have with your photography?

I have a photography business, so I want to have so many bookings that I have to turn people away! I want it to be a consistent part of my life.

What is your favorite shoot that you have done?

That’s so hard! My favorite pictures so far are pictures of another photographer friend and her boyfriend that I took. A couple from Texas hired me on a whim, and it was so fun to hang out with them too! It’s so hard because everyone is so different!
