On Saturday, Nov. 4th, Carroll College celebrates 114 years since its founding.
The day marks over a century’s worth of history, tradition, and a mission that we continue to cherish and contribute to today. Carroll College is more than an institution of higher education: Carroll College is the embodiment of the words Not for School, but for Life.
A Brief, Brief History
In 1909, President William Taft helped lay the cornerstone of what became Mount St. Charles College, named after the college’s Patron, St. Charles Borromeo.
Bishop John Carroll had a great vision for this institution and hoped to produce leaders through the liberal arts education we continue to cherish today.1
Thanks to Bishop Carroll, we are encouraged to see the world through a greater lens rather than our own vocation. We are called higher, to serve those in need, and to do our part in making the world a better place.
Tradition
Whether you know it or not, Carroll College has some long-standing traditions that have impacted our lives.
Thanks to these traditions, you are brought in to be part of something bigger than you realize. Your participation in events and engagement with the greater Carroll community makes us so much more than a statistic.
Thanks to the tradition of Carroll College, you have joined a family of over 130,000 Saints since 1909 (Mental math, don’t quote me).
As your Student Body President, I will join over 89 years of tradition through the Associated Students of Carroll College (ASCC).
Thanks to ASCC, students at Carroll College can express their joys and worries and know that people will listen and bring about change. We provide activities like Fridays at 4 that bring professors and students together outside of the classroom so that you know that professors are people too!
Even our very own Patrick Harris is part of the tradition!
As a former student, Patrick has made a career in keeping the tradition alive. As the Director of Student Activities, Pat has preserved traditions like the Guad Slip ‘n Slide, Homecoming Bed Race, Christmas Dinner, and so much more.
None of these events would be successful or fun without him. His leadership and commitment to the student body goes above and beyond every year.
Patrick is truly a cornerstone of this college. Thank you Patrick for all you do and I am so grateful for your dedication to making Carroll so special. The next time you see him, thank him for holding the keys that keep the tradition of Carroll College thriving!
Our Mission: Non Scholae, Sed Vitae
The truth is, I could write pages worth of acknowledgments and activities that keep the Carroll history, tradition, and mission alive.
At the end of the day, Carroll College’s heart continues to beat because of you, the students. Founders Day isn’t just about celebrating the past, it’s also celebrating you: the living history.
Saints, you keep the doors of this college open. You come here to educate yourselves, but you leave with a new family and home.
This is Carroll College.
You are prepared Not for School, but for Life.
On this Founders Day, take a moment to reflect on what makes Carroll so special; feel free to send me an email because I want to hear what you have to say!
Remember Saints, your passion and dedication to higher education keep the college going strong. You embody the idea of Not for School, but for Life.
Join me in celebrating Founders Day and let’s keep making tradition. St. Charles Borromeo, pray for us!
A special thank you to Kathleen O’Leary for her passion and commitment to the success of Carroll College. Kathleen is the Vice President of Student Af airs & Mission Integration at Carroll College. Thank you to Natalie Brown for encouraging me to participate in this edition of the Prospector. Thank you for the years of memories and friendship!
Thank you to the ASCC. You guys may drive me crazy at times, but you guys keep me motivated and passionate about making Carroll College a better place, not just now, but for generations to come. And last, but definitely not least, thank you to Patrick Harris. Where would we be without you Pat. Thank you for being the cornerstone that keeps the heart of the college beating. Keep doing what you do.
