On Oct. 1, Carroll College students participated in Service Saturday. This is a day to give back to Helena’s community in a variety of locations, doing different kinds of volunteer work. Service Saturday takes place a few times in a semester and is hosted by the Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice.

Josephine Howlett, a junior communication major from Bigfork, Montana, explained how participants of Service Saturday view their work.

“Service Saturday’s goal is to share God’s love with those less fortunate in a way that isn’t self-serving or seeking praise,” Howlett said.

Volunteer groups were sent to Wild Montana, Family Promise, Florence Crittenton, ExplorationWorks, Good Samaritan Thrift Store, and The Friendship Center. Service work included cleaning, sorting, and restoration. They helped enable these organizations to continue in the services they provide to many people in Helena’s community.

Deidre Casey, the assistant director of the Campus Ministry, explained the importance of Service Saturday in relation to Carroll’s mission.

“One of the precepts of our Carroll mission is ‘Serving all with humility, especially our neighbors who are poor and marginalized,’ and Service Saturdays provide opportunities for students to step out of their busy academic, professional and social lives to love and serve our neighbors,” Casey said.

The next Service Saturday will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19.
