The team had been preparing for their first match-up and were excited for their first game, set in Gilbert, Arizona, on Wednesday, Jan. 31. It was a double header game, one starting at 3 p.m., and the second to begin at 5 p.m.
The softball team won their first game 5-0 but lost their second game with a final score of 8-10. Brookelynn Jackson is a freshman infielder, and an elementary education major from Keizer, Oregon.
“I think for our first games together we played well. We have things to work on but for our first games of the season and first time being outside in months, I am super proud of how my girls played,” said Jackson.
Ellie Koerber is a junior outfielder and nursing major from Billings, Montana, who has been a part of the softball program for three years now.
“We’ve been working so hard and we are excited to finally get some action outside and in the sun,” said Koerber.
The Fighting Saints had a record of 20-28 during the 2023 season. This year the Saints signed 10 student athletes to the program. The softball program believes there is room for more wins this season.
Alyssa Lybbert, a junior catcher and health sciences major, from Las Vegas, Nevada. has also been a part of the softball program for three years.
“I’m pumped to compete with this team. We have been working super hard and I’m excited to see it pay off,” said Lybbert.
