The annual men’s retreat, hosted at Legendary Lodge, Jan. 26-28, kicked off the second semester with 35 men, fighting the cold to gather in fraternity, prayer, and worship.
“Men’s Retreat allowed me to grow closer to some of the guys I don’t normally see on campus,” said Luke Ostberg, a junior philosophy major from Fairfield, Montana. “It was a great opportunity to spend time with them and to spend time with the Lord.”
The yearly retreat gives the men of Carroll College an opportunity to go to Mass and explore their faith, but also spend time away from school. The weekend was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and virtually endless hot chocolate while the men fostered their fraternal relationships.
Kicking off the weekend, the retreaters participated in games of flag football with a light-up Frisbee on the field and lake. They also competed in the “Brolympics,” a quintessential men’s retreat activity consisting of hammerschlagen, relay races, and log throwing.
A group of Carroll College alumni also made an appearance, volunteering their time to cook food for the retreaters. Additionally, Todd Clark, a father of 13, Helena resident, and long-time supporter of Legendary Lodge gave a talk on Saturday night. Points from his talk included what it means to be a man in today’s culture, how he handled raising 13 children, and how God impacted his life.
The retreaters also seemed to enjoy his presence.
“I think he really spoke to the heart of a lot of guys because he shows what it really means to be successful as a man in his faith life, his family, and his career,” said Caleb Smith, a junior environmental science major from Columbia Falls, Montana.
These men were also joined by The Rev. Tyler Frolich, the new Carroll College campus chaplain, who provided them with the sacraments and helped lead discussions.
“Every man on this campus longs to be seen and loved,” Rev. Tyler said. “This retreat is where they can come to know Christ and hear about their true identity.”
