While many students retreat indoors when temperatures drop, the Carroll Adventure and Mountaineering Program (CAMP) sees winter as an opportunity for adventure.
With a lineup of fun cold-weather events, CAMP ensures people have opportunities to get outside and be active throughout the winter. Enjoying the outdoors in winter comes with its own set of challenges, but the student leaders of CAMP ensure that every trip is well-prepared.
“The Helena area has tons of things to do outside in the winter. We are fortunate to have cross-country skiing as close as five minutes at the Bill Roberts golf course (on the other side of the railroad tracks). I encourage students to bundle up and try something new to them outside during the winter,” said Bradley Maddock, the director of campus recreation, who is in his 11th year working at Carroll.
This season CAMP has planned a variety of events designed to make the most of the winter weather, such as weekly cross-country skiing trips, broom ball (similar to hockey but with a broom and ball instead of skates and puck), and beginner-friendly “fly tying for fly fishing.”
They also have ice skating events, trips to ski resorts around Montana, ice fishing, and advertising for local events such as the Wild Montana Backcountry Film Fest.
CAMP welcomes students of all experience levels. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or just curious about trying something new, the club offers activities for everyone. Those interested in getting involved in CAMP can hear about upcoming events in “The Rec” emails, which are sent to all students weekly.
“Sometimes motivating to get outside can be the biggest hurdle when it’s cold or snowing, but with proper clothing and excellent instruction from CAMP leaders, you are sure to have an excellent time outside,” said Maddock.
