How to: develop health and wellness habits

College students all across the world are faced with the challenge of balancing their diet, busy course loads, and maintaining their social life. The question is, how can they manage this? As new trends in lifestyle habits arise, college students continuously try to keep up.

Health and wellness seems to be at the bottom of students’ priorities, and this is due to many reasons. Time, money, and simply just not knowing how to get started are all perfect examples of what holds students back from thriving in their healthy lifestyles.

In the excitement and bliss of college life, maintaining healthy habits seems impossible. Here are 5 tips to kickstart a healthy lifestyle as a college student.

  1. Who Are You?

Forbes magazine is famous for their lifestyle ideals. A piece of advice that they give to college students is to first evaluate your interests and seek out what direction you want to take in your life. By doing so you can establish the type of activities you want and should make habits. The key to figuring out where to start when building a healthy lifestyle routine is to make sure that we are still true to ourselves and our interests. This way keeping these healthy habits isn’t a job but instead an activity that brings us joy and encouragement to want to continue these habits.

  1. Unplug and Podcast

As college students, we are constantly jamming out to our favorite playlists. Whether the new Drake album is blaring through your car radio, or you prefer rocking to heavy metal, replacing a song or two every day with a podcast can improve your mindset tremendously. The options for podcast categories are endless. The trick is to choose a series that applies to your current goals. Whether that be improving your cooking skills, learning how to save money, or waking up with a positive attitude, there are countless episodes to listen to to help students improve these goals.

  1. Make Time for Tidying

More often than not we find ourselves rushing through the day trying to cross off as many things on our planners as possible. It is important to take 10-15 minutes of your day and tidy up your space. Coming home from class to a made bed and clean desk area makes a world of a difference.

  1. Enjoying Exercise

Nutrition is at the bottom of many students’ priorities, however, it is typically the case of not knowing how to get started or stay on track with healthy nutritious meals. Late-night snacking is the ying to students’ yangs. Although a pack of Oreos washed down with a cold glass of 2% hits the spot after a three-hour study session…it comes back to bite us.

Making sure we incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into our routine is crucial to balancing our Oreo-filled diets. The HAC opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. This leaves all of us students with plenty of time to get in there and at least look at a treadmill. The key to building this habit is to enjoy doing it. Find an exercise that sparks your interest and get your friends involved. This could be anything from casual sunrise hiking to a calming yoga session.

  1. Make Cooking Fun

Eating healthy is easier said than done. What if using an air fryer could solve all your dorm room cooking disasters? Luckily Food Network and thousands of Pinterest posts have come to the rescue. Cooking is as simple as ever now. From chicken tenders to eggs, the options are endless and easy with air fryer recipes.
