On Saturday, Sept 21 the Saints fell to Montana Tech, 25-15, 17-25, 24-26, 25-27.
The Saints started strong in the first match with 17 kills compared to the Oredigger’s 11. The Saints’ kills were led by sophomore Lauren Heuiser. This allowed the Saints to win the first set with a score of 25-15.
“It was a fun weekend with lots of competitive volleyball,” said Heuiser, a sophomore from Helena, who is working to receive a degree in Pre-Elementary and Special Education.
The second set was lost by Carroll as they had fewer kills than the opposing team and more errors were made that put them behind. However, the third and fourth matches proved to be more intense as both ending scores resulted in overtime play.
The third set resulted in a score of 24-26, with the Orediggers in the lead. The stats for this match were relatively identical between both teams with 13 kills by Carroll and 11 kills by Tech, 7 errors each, and a .154 hitting percentage from Carroll and a .108 for Tech.
The Saints fought hard during the fourth match, however, they came short with a 25-27 final score. Overall for this match, the Oredigger’s kills gave them the lead as they had 19 kills and Carroll came up five short with 14.
“We fought a hard battle and didn’t come out on top, but we are optimistic,” Heuiser said.
The Saints are 11-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Their next game will be hosting MSU-Northern on Thursday, Sept 26.
