U.S. immigration law and Catholic social teaching

A panel discussion examining the relationship between U.S. immigration law and Catholic social teaching took place Thursday, Feb. 19, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lower Campus Center.

Immigration Law and Catholic Social Teaching brought together people from academia, the legal field, and the Catholic Church to discuss moral, legal, and social perspectives on immigration.

The panelists included Dr. Alex Street, Bishop Austin Vetter, immigration attorney Andrea Sweeney, and Dagim Degaro.

“I loved the opportunity to learn about a big political issue in the U.S. from a religious standpoint,” said Gabriella Domenici, a junior business major from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The event was open to the campus community and the public to learn about contemporary social issues.

The audience was given the opportunity to hear multiple perspectives and engage with the panel during the discussion.

“It was a way to get everyone aware of a situation they otherwise wouldn’t have known about,” said Xzavier Ford, a senior Sociology major from Glendora, California.
