Who are you? Where are you from? Year and Major?
My name is Makena Trumbull. I am a sophomore Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major from Las Vegas, Nevada.
When was your trip and where did you go?
My trip was from December 27 to January 12. And I went all over Morocco. We went to Casablanca, Essaouira, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Merzouga, Fes, Tangier, Assilah, and Chefchaouen.
What class allowed you to attend and which teacher led the trip?
My study abroad trip was in Morocco and fulfilled my History credit. My trip was led by Shannon Ackeret and Jeanette Fregulia. Dr. Fregulia is a History professor at Carroll and lived in Morocco in the past. They were excellent guides and amazing aides in helping us adjust to the different cultures.
Why did you choose to study abroad?
I chose to study abroad because I wanted to immerse myself in new experiences while also fulfilling my history credit by learning firsthand. I was eager to explore the world, challenge myself by stepping outside my comfort zone, and gain a broader, more global perspective. Enhancing my language skills in French and Spanish was also a key motivation. I believe that language is a powerful bridge to truly connecting with others, and being able to immerse myself in both languages within their native cultures has been an incredibly enriching experience.
Which topic during the class was your favorite?
My favorite part of the class was the opportunity for firsthand experiences. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in the culture, and I learned so much through direct involvement. It was eye-opening to witness how different their way of life is. One standout experience was participating in a traditional Hammam bath, which gave me a profound sense of the cultural contrasts between our lives. What stood out to me most was how uplifting and grateful they are toward others—there’s a genuine sense of community, kindness, and helpfulness that shaped their worldview.
What were some of your favorite things to do outside of class?
My time in the Saharan desert was absolutely unforgettable; the experience of seeing the dunes firsthand is something everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. The camel ride, the 4×4 excursion, the pottery, and cooking classes—each activity was incredible in its own way. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to take part in all of them; it was an unforgettable experience.
How was the culture different from here and where you were at?
The culture in Morocco was strikingly different from the United States. In many ways, it felt like a tight-knit community, where people were incredibly helpful and selfless. However, it was also clear that there are areas where progress is slower, particularly when it comes to issues like women’s rights and gender equality.
Would you recommend studying abroad and why?
Absolutely! As the trip went on, and even after returning from my study abroad experience, I’ve become increasingly grateful for the chance to learn in such an immersive way. I truly believe everyone should explore the world and experience other cultures firsthand. I highly recommend studying abroad to anyone, and I definitely plan to do it again!
