Saints Cross Country performed well at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge placing 9th of 25 teams for the women and 13th of 28 teams for the men.
Each race contained 13 teams ranked nationally in the NAIA Top 25 as well as multiple teams receiving votes. Conditions were ideal for racing with sunny, calm, cool weather. The Carroll women (currently ranked 19th) beat 14th-ranked Aquinas, and the Carroll men (currently receiving votes) beat 14th-ranked Goshen and 24th-ranked Shawnee State.
Reghan Worley placed highest for the women in 23rd and Zach Rector for the men in 54th. The men had an impressive 1-5 spread of only 37 seconds.
The Saints again achieved multiple personal records in the competition. Hannah Sempf, Erika Arthur, and Kyle Olson ran their best time ever for 5k. Rector, Connor O’Hara, Brycen Gardner, Van Gottwals, James Normandeau, and Clayton Ryerson ran their fastest time of 8k.
“There were a ton of positives today both in terms of our execution and our growth,” Head Coach Shannon Flynn said. “We were particularly strong late in the race for almost all of the men and women. It was great practice in a big, competitive atmosphere, and I was especially pleased with how we stuck in our packs despite the chaos around us.”
Carroll will be back to training for the next two weeks before the Frontier Conference Championships in Helena, Mont. on November 4.
