Carroll College Theatre is currently still selling tickets to its second spring production, Suzette Who Set to Sea, which will run until April 13.
This play, written by Australian playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer, tells the heartwarming story of Suzette, a young woman living in a seaside village where the traditional roles of men and women are sharply divided.
While the men build boats, Suzette longs for the sea and feels destined for something more. The production follows her journey as she sets out on a quest to prove herself worthy of her destiny, ultimately taking her on a sea voyage with her loved ones aboard a boat she secretly builds.
This family-friendly play explores universal themes of bravery, destiny, and breaking free from societal expectations. Its design incorporates whimsical elements, including object puppetry and sea monsters, creating an imaginative and engaging atmosphere for audiences of all ages.
The play is staged in an alley-style configuration, allowing the audience to be close to the action, further enhancing the immersive experience.
“Working with the Carroll Theatre Department is always a fun experience. This upcoming production, Suzette Who Set to Sea, is joyous and entertaining from beginning to end,” said Kadee Melton, a double major in English Writing and Theatre from Layton, Utah. “I’ve enjoyed every second with my amazing cast.”
Suzette Who Set to Sea is particularly noted for its clever script, filled with linguistic tricks that will entertain both children and adults. According to a review of the original 2014 production at Honolulu Theater for Youth, the play is filled with slapstick comedy and fun that appeals to all generations.
Carroll College Theatre’s decision to produce Suzette Who Set to Sea highlights its commitment to bringing diverse, engaging, and thought-provoking works to the stage, providing a platform for both young and older audiences to connect through the power of storytelling. With its charming narrative and dynamic staging, this production promises to be a memorable addition to the college’s spring season.
The last showings of Suzette Who Set to Sea will be on Friday, April 11, Saturday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m., and then April 13 at 2:30 p.m.
