What got you into Photography?

  • My parents bought me a camera when I was a freshman in high school just to try it out and see if I liked it. We went on this big trip to Europe, and I really got to explore what it does and practice shooting landscapes, people, animals, flowers, and anything I could take a picture of. After that, I just kept practicing and when I got to Carroll, I took Garrett Thompson’s photography class freshman year. The next semester he hired me, so now I work for Floating Leaf Studios and so this whole summer I’ve been with him doing wedding photography, headshots, and commercial photography.

What inspires you?

  • Well, I have a hard time putting things into words and I think photography helps me say what I want to say without words. Just capturing people in moments in time is really cool.

What’s your favorite type of photography?

  • At first, I really enjoyed landscape and scenery, but now, working with Garrett, I really enjoy taking pictures of people and capturing their emotions in time, so more like portraits.

What is your artistic process?

  • I don’t know if I really have one. I just have a feeling when something catches my eye and really sparks something where you can almost feel what the image portrays. But a lot of the time, I’ll try to look up inspiration from other places and see how I can add my own spin to it.

Do you have any future photography plans?

  • I hope so, probably not as a full-time job, but maybe as a side gig that could be fun or just as a hobby, but I definitely could.

What’s made you stick with photography?

  • I just want to keep getting better and keep practicing. I think that’s it, I just want to see where I can go.

Big thanks to Kaitlyn for sharing her photographic journey with us. If you are interested in having your photography in the next issue, make sure to email submissions to me at kcrozier@carroll.edu.
We’re excited to see what else Carroll students have to share.
