The 1920s came to town, and with it, a murder.
On Saturday, Feb. 6, 79 people attended “Cannon Fodder,” an interactive murder mystery experience created by Red Ink Plays.
Amber Barnes, an adjunct theater teacher and special population coordinator at Carroll College, developed Red Ink Plays with the help of her husband, Ross Barnes, and Tom Trangmoe, a Carroll alumnus.
This was the company’s third mystery play and was held at The Montana Club in downtown Helena. The performance was sold out a full week in advance, with each ticket costing $100.

“I was delighted to be able to come to the preview,” said Samantha Strom, a Helena resident who attended the dress rehearsal. “It was fun to see so many of the actors that I know performing in such a nontraditional way.”
Lily Hoelscher, a Helena resident and Carroll graduate, helped to revise the script since “Cannon Fodder” was first performed in 2021 by the Carroll Theater club.
“It feels like there is a market for this,” said Hoelscher after the show was considered to be a success. “And that the experiment is working.”
As a result, Red Ink Plays already has two more plays planned for this August and next February.
