Door Lore: What’s up with Guad closets?

Students have long heard the infamous story of the missing men’s closet doors in Guadalupe Hall due to the students sledding on the doors.

However, this isn’t the case.

Carroll College’s gold team – a student-led tour team – shares the story of the missing men’s closet doors as a characteristic of Guadalupe Hall. The story led most students to believe the doors were destroyed or confiscated after they were taken sledding and that the men’s side of Guadalupe Hall was the culprit.

Sophie Rodrigues, a Carroll Alumni, knows the history.

“It was Christmas break time 2015-2016,” said Rodrigues. “After they were taken away, they started using other items from the dorms like the chairs to sled down the hill.”

The doors were believed to have been confiscated based on rumors of this incident and the timing of their removal. However, this is not the true reason why the men’s side of Guadalupe Hall doesn’t have closet doors.

Rather, the “doors were being destroyed, so they were taken off and made into shelves,” stated Dan Byrd, the Director of Facilities at Carroll College.

Outside of the gold team talking about the doors on the tours, do students even notice whether their closet doors are present or missing? Closet doors are either there or they’re not, and they are not usually the subject of opinion. However, maybe if they were missing, it would draw some attention.

“I didn’t really care, and I just thought that was how the closets were supposed to be,” said Robby Loft, a Business sophomore from Spokane, Washington. Loft is also a residential assistant who lives on the Men’s side of Guadalupe Hall.

This isn’t the case for the women’s side of Guad.

“I think I would freak out if I didn’t have doors,” said Leah Melvin, a sophomore studying Political science, international relations, and philosophy, from Twin Falls, Idaho. “I’m very organized and the doors don’t let other people see any possible messes.”
