Literary festival showcases community talent

On Thursday, Nov. 9, the members of the English Writing Senior Capstone Seminar will be hosting its annual literary festival in the lower CUBE from 1 to 10 p.m.

“The Carroll College Lucky Duck Undergraduate Literary Festival is organized and operated by the English Senior Capstone class: Julia Hackl, John Phillips, Ashtyn Reiners, and Keaton Pettis,” said Professor Kevin Stewart.

The Literary Festival is an annual event that showcases the creative and literary talent of Carroll and other Montana students and community members. All events are free and the Helena community is encouraged to attend and submit.

Old writing, new writing, writing done for reasons other than fulfilling assignments at Carroll or anywhere else,” said Julia Hackl, a senior English Writing major from Portland, Oregon.

“The festival’s name is derived from the AMC series Lucky Hank, which is based on Richard Russo’s novel Straight Man, works being watched and read by the class this semester,” said Stewart.

There are gift-card prizes from Montana Book Company for 1st place ($250) and 2nd place ($125). Winners will present, along with this semester’s Capstone students, at the festival.

“We are looking for fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, memoir, academic essays, one-act plays, performance/slam poetry, graphic literature, and what not,” said John Phillips, a senior English Writing major from Eagle, Idaho.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. Anyone from any major is encouraged to submit. For additional submission guidelines: https://www.carroll.edu/news-events/events/lit-fest-submissions-due. You can also contact litfest@carroll.edu for any questions or inquiries.

“If you feel you might need a little extra time, let us know by Monday, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m., and we’ll try our best to accommodate you,” said Stewart. “Capstone students are not eligible for the prizes.”

“We look forward to seeing your work!” said the English Capstone class of 2023.
