When the going gets tough, Saints must step up

I don’t know if anyone else feels the same, but recently it seems like something wrong or bad is happening left and right in the world.

You open your phone and one of the first things you see is chaos in politics, war, environmental issues, and just about anything you can think of.

My response to this? Attempting to stay in my own little, but happy bubble.

If I ignore the serious issues, they just aren’t there, right? It’s like studying for an exam. If I go to bed, my calculus exam isn’t there and is rather a problem for the future Harlie.

For the most part, this works for smaller things.

But when it comes to the real world, we can’t exactly ignore what is happening around us.

Everyone tells our generation that eventually, we will be the ones running the world. But we can’t do that if there is no world to run. That means it is more important now than ever to get out of our bubbles, and stop ignoring what we individually deem as important or wrong.

I am a firm believer that in this day and age, it is never the case where we have to sit around and claim that there is just nothing we can do to change something. There is always something that can be done. No matter the size of the action, it is still an action and will always affect the outcome.

With this being said, I encourage us to start a revolution of action. If you feel as though something is wrong and goes against your sense of justice, speak up, and do something about it.

Even if it is starting small.

For instance, here is a list of five things we ordinary students could do that might make a difference.

  1. Help your peers. Offer to tutor classmates, share study materials, or simply encourage others in their learning journey.
  2. Get involved in your community. Join or start clubs that focus on social issues, volunteer for local causes, or participate in community clean-up events.
  3. Advocate for change. Speak up about issues that matter, whether it’s improving school policies, promoting mental health awareness, or advocating for sustainability.
  4. Support local businesses & initiatives. Instead of big corporations, choose to buy from or promote local stores, student-run businesses, or ethical brands.
  5. Be a role model. Lead by example through kindness, responsibility, and hard work, inspiring those around you to do the same.

Starting with these smaller issues will eventually help lead us to speak up more powerfully for the bigger issues.

No matter what the outcome is, it is better to try and fail than to stay in your bubble, no matter how happy you are there, standing up for yourself and what you believe in will feel ten times better.
