About a dozen Carroll College students gathered on Thursday, Jan. 15. at Stonetree Climbing Center for a special climbing event.
The event brought together beginner climbers and experienced climbers to show the many different climbing routes on a rock wall.
To ensure their safety, students initially received a safety demonstration so they could enjoy and focus on their experience instead of worrying about falling. Students were encouraged to take their time scaling the wall, which allowed the use of problem solving, resilience, and strategic planning.
“I am having a great time here,” said Andrew Pfeiffenberger, freshman from Great Falls. “I love coming to Stonetree because there are better climbing routes here than there are at the HAC.”
It was not only a climbing event, it was also an educational opportunity for those who attended as they were able to learn more about climbing careers and recreation. Stonetree employees were available to answer questions and offer help.
“I love when I get to help someone with a technique that helps them make it up the wall faster, so many people here are always looking for more tips and tricks to get better and that’s why I love working here,” said Carly Newborn, a Stonetree employee.
Students said they would recommend this event to other Carroll students and athletes.
“It’s something new for people who haven’t done it before, and for people who have, it’s fun,” said junior Samuel McGee, an engineering major from Forest Grove, Oregon.
The event encouraged students to interact with others, with many climbers offering encouragement and helping to one another after each climb. Organizers said the goal was to grow interest in climbing while creating a welcoming environment.
The event ran from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and not one person had left early. As the night wrapped up, the smiles stayed around.
