Carroll ghost stories

St. Charles Hall, the oldest building on campus, was built in 1909. In Carroll College’s early years, this was the only building, it was used for classrooms, student housing, dining, and faculty offices. Since that time, stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and some stories are still told today. If you’ve ever lived in St. Charles, you have probably heard the stories of the “haunted bathroom” on the fourth floor.

The most well-known ghost story began after the year 1964 when a student passed away after an accident in the bathroom. One night a student who had supposedly been drinking came back to his dorm on the fourth floor of St. Charles and went to the bathroom to brush his teeth. While he was in there he blacked out and hit his head on the bathroom sink which caused hemorrhaging in his brain. While he didn’t die in the bathroom, he passed away a week later in the hospital due to pneumonia.

Quickly after the incident, students still living in the building began reporting strange occurrences. Some said they saw the young man with his head still bleeding standing behind them when they looked in the mirror. Others claimed the faucet would run red like blood when they turned it on. The reports continued to escalate and the stories of a blood stain on the floor that would not go away concerned the administration.

Because of the strange incidents, the bathroom was locked and boarded up, as it remains today. Even after, there are rumors that students still hear scraping and scratching sounds from behind the boards.
