Carroll fundraises for multi-million dollar facilities building

Carroll’s new $1.5 million multi-purpose facilities building will be named after the Biskupiak family, who have maintained the college’s facilities for more than 50 years. The building would likely be located adjacent to the current grounds building near the soccer field.

Walter “Butch” Biskupiak has been a part of the Carroll College Staff for more than 47 years. His late father Walt Biskupiak worked as the assistant director of facilities for almost 22 years.

Butch started his Carroll career as a custodian. Since then, he has filled the roles of groundskeeper, boiler man, and assistant director of facilities. He has been the director of facilities for the past 10 years.

“Nearly every day for the past 47 years, Butch has continued to pour his heart and soul into making Carroll College a better place for all,” said Dan Byrd, assistant director of facilities.

In honor of the Biskupiak family, the new building will be named the Biskupiak Building of Maintenance.

Joyce Stewart is on Carroll’s board of trustees and is the chair of the building and grounds committee. She has been the primary advocate for this project.

“It’s time to take care of our facilities department, their employees, and to honor what the Biskupiak family has done for Carroll,” Stewart said.

It will be a multi-purpose building, replete with offices, meeting rooms, and a multi-bay workshop. The new building is meant to improve the operational efficiency of the Facilities Department.

Currently, the Facilities Department also encompasses the grounds, custodial, and maintenance departments. Collectively, they have about 23 employees, two of which are part-time. Sixteen of those employees are custodians and the grounds crew is a three-person team.

Biskupiak and Byrd manage all four departments and 21 employees.

Those two men coordinate all the community relationships, repairs, renovations, new construction, storage, and more. They do it all out of a decrepit bungalow that was built in the 1940s.

“The Facilities Department is able to do more with less than most other institutions because we have high-quality people,” Byrd said.

Byrd and Stewart both expressed immense gratitude for the continued support from Dick Anderson of Dick Anderson Construction, which has built and renovated many of Carroll’s facilities throughout the years.

The fundraising campaign for this project is underway and is about to reach half of its $1.5 million goal. They hope to begin construction later this year; this July at the earliest. However, they still need to fundraise an additional $700,000 before they can begin construction.
