Security gives misbehavin’ cars “The Boot”

Carroll College has implemented stricter parking enforcement measures on campus, including the use of vehicle wheel-locking devices known as “boots,” according to an announcement by Jay Nelson, director of campus security and public safety.

Nelson addressed the parking situation in an email to students, faculty and staff, highlighting ongoing issues with vehicles parked improperly or without valid permits. The booting policy aims to encourage adherence to parking regulations and enhance campus safety, particularly in preventing blocked emergency vehicle access.

“One of the deficiencies we have observed is those that have not obtained a parking permit and continue to disregard rules and regulations,” Nelson wrote. “Additionally, I have seen vehicles parked in no-parking areas that could prevent others from moving their vehicles or, more importantly, could inhibit emergency vehicles from responding.”

Vehicles that violate parking rules will receive a high-visibility sticker on the driver’s side window, alerting the driver that a boot has been applied. The fee to remove the boot is $53.

While Nelson acknowledged reluctance to use this method, he emphasized the need for fairness toward those who follow campus parking regulations.

The new policy has received mixed responses from students. Some students have expressed frustration after having their cars booted, while others appreciate the enforcement of regulations to ensure fairness.

“It’s frustrating, especially if you’re in a rush, but I understand why they’re doing it,” said a Carroll student who recently had their car booted and wished to remain anonymous.

The full parking policy and a campus parking map can be accessed through Carroll College’s official website.
