AI on stage: “Anthropology”

The play “Anthropology” had its first of six showings on Friday, Feb. 20, at the Flex Theater.

The play was chosen and directed by Julia Harris, who is a part-time theater instructor at Carroll.

Harris has taken inspiration from theater history and how theater itself can be used to encourage conversation.

This play opened the door for discussion around the use of Artificial Intelligence – or AI – in our daily lives.

“I think we are served by remembering we are a community,” said Harris.

In addition to directing the play, Harris planned and organized various panels and discussion-based events surrounding the showings of the play.

“Anthropology” by Lauren Gunderson examines whether or not AI can be used to help someone grieve.

It does this through the character of Merril, who is trying to handle the loss of her sister Angie.

During the performances, Merrill was played by Mary Williams, the stage manager for the show and Brooke McClenning, a Carroll graduate.

Williams stepped up to the role during the opening weekend while McClenning was sick.

The role of Angie was played by Kadee Melton, a junior theater major from Layton, Utah.

In the end, through the play and supplementary panels, Harris accomplished her goal of creating more discussion around the use of AI and its place in society.
