Blazing keyboards: Esports team catches fire

The Carroll College esports team kicked off its fourth season with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Kelowna Gas of Okanagan College on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The game marked the first of the team’s 7-game regular season. Their impressive performance has set the stage for what they hope will be a championship run this year.

Competing in Overwatch 2, a fast-paced, team-based first-person shooter, Carroll College dominated the opening match, showcasing strong preparation and teamwork.

The game features two teams of five players, each selecting unique heroes with distinct abilities, creating a dynamic blend of strategy and mechanical skill. Players must capture or escort objectives while the opposing team defends, with matches played in a best-of-five format.

The team’s coordination and hero choices led them to victory, making it clear they are ready for a strong season ahead.

Jasmine Cymbala, a first year nursing student from Hamilton, Montana, reported feeling “extremely nervous” before the game, but once the game began the team was excelling.

“I knew it would be a dominant win after our first defense on Kings Row,” Cymbala said. “I’ve never defended so hard in my life.”

Ben Wallace, a sophomore civil engineering major from Mahomet, Illinois, was also excited about the win and the rest of the season.

“I hope we can carry this momentum through the regular season and playoffs,” Wallace added. “I only joined last semester, but we have much more confidence this season and I’m not sure if we have ever had such a dominant start.”

According to Wallace, the team has its sights set on a national championship.

Carroll College fans can follow the team’s progress and receive weekly updates on their Instagram page, carroll_esports. The regular season will run through March 12, concluding with a match against Eastern New Mexico University. Playoffs begin on March 26.
