Table manners and brussel sprouts: Saints tune up their dinner game

Students at Carroll College were given a valuable opportunity to practice their professional skills during the recent Career Connections Mixer, held on Tuesday, November 12.

The mixer, free for senior Carroll students, included networking opportunities and practice in social settings.

The event began with a session on etiquette, sharing information with students on confidently navigating formal settings. This included professional introductions, tips on handshaking, the most optimal place to put a nametag, strategies to enter and exit conversations, and much more.

There were several employers present, giving students the chance to put their new skills into action. The students and the employers engaged in conversation while also learning how to balance eating hors d’oeuvres while holding conversations.

“I really enjoyed learning new skills and being able to put them into practice during this event,” said Mailee Bui, a senior education major from Tri-Cities, Washington.

After the networking social, the dinner and presentation began. The meal consisted of pork tenderloin, brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes. While they ate, the attendees listened to a presentation by The Rev. Patrick Beretta, Chair of the Carroll College Board of Trustees.

“Networking is not just about exchanging information,” said Laurie Rodriguez, Director of Career Services.”It’s about creating lasting connections that can open doors to opportunities and growth. In fact, this event continues to generate numerous internship and job opportunities, showcasing its lasting impact and value!”
