Students often choose to come to Carroll for outdoor activities. And living in Montana, where there’s no shortage of rivers and fly fishing is a way of life for some, many students find themselves eager to take up the hobby.
Luckily, CAMP is now offering a fly tying class every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the HAC conference room, for those who are interested in diving into the sport.
This class offers the opportunity to blend artistry and angling in a hands-on learning experience.
The class is not just about learning the mechanics of tying flies but also understanding the insects that certain fish in the Helena area eat.
“Fly tying is a great way to relax the mind and get creative. I have had plenty of people come to these events that have never even fly fished before and so it really is a beginner friendly event and I invite any and all to come check it out”, said Chris Schuver, a senior nursing major from Portland, Oregon,
Chris, is an avid fly fisher and experienced fly tier that leads the class with enthusiasm and expertise.
The HAC provides all the necessary materials and tools and the class is made up of all experience levels. Whether you’re a seasoned fly tier or you’ve never even fished, this is the perfect class for you.
“It’s a great way to spend time with friends, whether you like fly fishing or not”, said Jack England, a junior Health Science major from Meridian, Idaho. “It’s a fun hobby to learn and I’ve loved getting to meet the other guys in the class.”
The flies that students tie during this class can be used for many other CAMP activities later in the semester, as well as on the Montana rivers in the summers.
CAMP invites fishing enthusiasts to join them for ice fishing, fly fishing, and other outdoor activities this spring. Dates and times will be announced weekly in the Halo Happenings email.
